Now John’s vision shifts from earth to heaven and focuses on the “ ‘things which must take place after this’ ” (Rev. 4:1, NKJV) — the future.

The vision of chapters 4 and 5 takes place in heaven’s throne room. The scene of chapters 4 and 5 symbolically portrays God’s control of history and of the plan of salvation. Before the future is revealed, however, we are shown the centrality of Christ’s high-priestly ministry in heaven to His sovereignty over the affairs of the earth and to His redemption of the human race. In such a way, chapters 4 and 5 provide Heaven’s perspective on the meaning of future events recorded in the rest of the book.

One also may notice that while the messages to the seven churches were written in somewhat straightforward language, from now on the book employs even more symbolic language that is not always easy to interpret. This language is taken from the history of God’s people, as recorded in the Old Testament. A correct interpretation of Revelation requires a proper understanding of its symbolic language in light of the Old Testament.* Study this week’s lesson to prepare for Sabbath, January 26.

Sunday January
20

In the Heavenly Throne Room

Starting in Revelation 4:1, Jesus invites John to come up to heaven to be shown a panoramic survey of history from his time until Christ’s return.

Revelation 4:1–8, Ezekiel 1:26–28, and Revelation 5:11–14 describe heaven’s throne room. What do these verses teach us about the nature of the heavenly throne room?
________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ The apostle looked through the open door into the heavenly temple and at the throne of God. The throne symbolizes God’s rule and gov-erning authority over creation, while the rainbow around the throne signifies God’s faithfulness to His promises (Gen. 9:13–16; Isa. 54:9, 10). However, Satan, who usurped the dominion of this earth and is God’s adversary, has disputed divine authority. The central issue in the great controversy between God and Satan is about who has the right to rule. The purpose of the heavenly council that John saw gathered in the heavenly throne room was to affirm God’s rightful rule over the universe (Rev. 4:1–8, Rev. 5:11–14) .

Read Revelation 4:8–11 and Revelation 5:9–14. What can you learn about true worship in these passages? In chapter 4, why is the Lord God worthy of being worshiped, and, in Revelation 5:9–14, why is the Lamb worthy?
________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Revelation 4 gives a general description of the throne room in the heavenly temple and of the worship that repeatedly takes place there.

While the worship in chapter 4 praises God’s creative power, chapter 5 celebrates the redemption provided by the slain Lamb. These chapters show that true worship recounts and celebrates God’s mighty acts of Creation and Redemption. God, who created the world in six days, has the power and ability also to restore the world to its original condition and to turn it into the eternal home for His people, all of which He has promised to do.

Think about what the gospel teaches: the One who created not just us and our world, but the entire cosmos, also was the “Lamb who was slain” (Rev. 5:12, NKJV) for us. What amazing hope does this teaching present amid a world full of pain and turmoil?

Monday January 21

The Heavenly Assembly in the Throne Room

The description of the elders in Revelation 4:4 shows that they are not angelic beings. The title “elders” in the Bible always is used for humans. In contrast to angels, who invariably stand in God’s presence, these elders sit on thrones. The white robes they wear are the attire of God’s faithful people (Rev. 3:4, 5). The victory crowns (from Greek stephanos, Rev. 4:4) on their heads are reserved exclusively for the victorious saints (James 1:12). All of these details suggest that the 24 elders are glorified saints.

The number 24 is symbolic: it consists of two sets of 12, the number 12 in the Bible being a symbol of God’s people. The 24 elders could represent God’s people in their totality, from both the Old and New Testament times. The number 24 also mirrors the chiefs of the 24 divi-sions of priests who took turns serving in the earthly temple services (1 Chron. 24:1–19).

The fact that the 24 elders were never mentioned before in the Bible implies that they are a new group in the heavenly throne room.

They perhaps are the ones who were raised from the dead at the time of Jesus’ death (Matt. 27:51–53).

If so, these 24 elders who ascended to heaven with Jesus become representatives of humanity, to witness the fairness in God’s actions in the realization of the plan of salvation.

In Revelation 5:9, the 24 elders, along with the four living creatures (vs. 8) , fall down in worship before the Lamb who was slain and yet lives. Together, they sing a new song, extolling the Lamb as the One who is worthy, because: “ ‘You were slain and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth’ ” (Rev. 5:8–10, NKJV) .

Revelation 4:6–8 also mentions the four living creatures, or beings. Compare their description with the four living beings in Ezekiel 1:5–14 and Ezekiel 10:20–22 and with the seraphim in Isaiah 6:2, 3. ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________The four living creatures symbolize the exalted beings who serve God as His agents and the guardians of His throne (Ps. 99:1). Their wings point symbolically to their swiftness in carrying out God’s orders, and their eyes point to their intelligence. Their presence, together with the 24 elders and a myriad of angels around the throne (Rev. 5:11) , shows that both heaven and earth are represented in the throne room.

Tuesday January 22

The Sealed Scroll

Read Revelation 5:1–4. In light of Isaiah 29:11, 12, what is the mean-ing of the sealed scroll, and why did John weep? ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________The Greek text indicates that the scroll was lying on the throne at the right hand of the Father. It waited for the One who was worthy to take it and “ ‘to loose its seals’ ” (Rev. 5:2, NKJV).

In the words of Ellen G. White, the sealed scroll contains “the history of God’s providences, the prophetic history of nations and the church. Herein was contained the divine utterances, His authority, His com-mandments, His laws, the whole symbolic counsel of the Eternal, and the history of all ruling powers in the nations. In symbolic language was contained in that roll the influence of every nation, tongue, and people from the beginning of earth’s history to its close.”—Ellen G. White, Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 7.

In short, the sealed scroll contains the mystery of God regarding His plans to solve the sin problem and save fallen human beings. The full realization of that mystery will occur at the second coming of Christ (see Rev. 10:7).

Read Revelation 5:5–7. Why is Christ the only One in the whole uni-verse worthy to take the sealed scroll and unseal it? ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________
The crisis in the throne room is related to Satan’s rebellion. This planet, although created by God, has been under the dominion of the usurper, Satan. John’s tears expressed the longing of God’s people, since Adam, for salvation from the bondage of sin. The sealed scroll comprised God’s plan for resolving the sin problem. No doubt with His immeasurable power God Himself could realize that plan. However, the redemption of the fallen human race required something special, and that was Jesus, who did “overcome” and thus was worthy to open the book, to assume the lordship over this earth, and become our Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary.

How do we learn to keep Jesus first and foremost in our Christian experience?

Wednesday January 23

Worthy Is the Lamb

Read Revelation 5:8–14 along with Ephesians 1:20–23 and Hebrews 10:12. Together, what are they saying that should give us great hope and comfort amid a world that, in and of itself, offers so little of either? ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ As Christ the Lamb approaches the throne, He takes the scroll. This act shows that all authority and sovereignty belong to Him (see Matt. 28:18, Eph. 1:20–22). At that moment, the whole universe acknowl -edges Christ’s rightful rule over earth. What was lost with Adam has been regained with Christ.

When Christ takes the scroll, it shows He holds the destiny of all humanity in His hands. The four living creatures and the 24 elders fall down before Him and worship, as they did in Revelation 5:9: “ ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain’ ” (NKJV). By this act of adoration, the exalted angels and the representa -tives of redeemed humanity affirm Christ’s sacrifice on behalf of human-ity. With His blood, He has paid the ransom for fallen human beings and offers them all the hope of redemption and the promise of a future we barely can imagine.

The four living creatures and the elders are now joined by the count-less number of the angelic host surrounding the throne and directing praises to the Lamb that had been slain and now “lives to make inter-cession” for the fallen race (Heb. 7:25, NKJV) .

In unison, the occupants of the throne room exclaim with a loud voice: “ ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’ ” (Rev. 5:12, NKJV). At this point all creation in heaven and on earth joins together in offering royal adoration both to the Father and Christ: “ ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’ ” (Rev. 5:13, NKJV). Their praise is met with an “ ‘Amen’ ” by the four living creatures and the prostration of the 24 elders, thus concluding this rapturous veneration in the heavenly throne room.

Physicists speculate that one day the universe will burn out, col-lapse in on itself, or just rip apart. What a contrast to the future presented in the Word of God! How can we start rejoicing, even now, in the future that awaits us?
______________________________________________________

Thursday January 24

The Significance of Pentecost

In the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Acts 2:1–4 con-firms one of the most decisive events in the history of the plan of salvation: the inauguration of Christ into His post-Calvary ministry as High Priest and King in the heavenly sanctuary (see also Acts 1:4–8; Acts 2:33). Through His high-priestly ministry at the right hand of the Father (Rev. 5:6, 7), Christ is able to carry out the plan of salvation to its ultimate realization. As our Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary, Jesus works to save us. Through Him, believers may have free access to God and receive forgiveness for their sins.

Read Acts 2:32–36 along with John 7:39. What hope and encourage-ment do you find in the fact that Jesus stands in heaven as our Priest and King? ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ The exaltation of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary was followed by the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Revelation 5:6 mentions the seven Spirits that are “sent out into all the earth” (NKJV). As we saw in an earlier lesson, the seven Spirits denote the fullness of the activity of the Holy Spirit in the world. At Christ’s enthronement the Spirit is sent to the church. This sending of the Holy Spirit is one of Christ’s first acts as our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit meant that Jesus had appeared before the Father and that God had accepted His sacrifice on behalf of humanity.

“Christ’s ascension to heaven was the signal that His followers were to receive the promised blessing. . . . When Christ passed within the heavenly gates, He was enthroned amidst the adoration of the angels.

As soon as this ceremony was completed, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in rich currents, and Christ was indeed glorified, even with the glory which He had with the Father from all eternity. The Pentecostal outpouring was Heaven’s communication that the Redeemer’s inauguration was accomplished. According to His promise, He had sent the Holy Spirit from heaven to His followers as a token that He had, as priest and king, received all authority in heaven and on earth, and was the Anointed One over His people.”—Ellen G. White, The Acts of the Apostles , pp. 38, 39
.

Read Hebrews 4:16 and Hebrews 8:1. What hope and encourage-ment do you find in the assurance that Jesus, as Priest and King, has received all authority in heaven and on earth? How does believing this truth help you deal with everyday situations in your life and with the uncertainty of the future?

Further Thought: Read Ellen G. White, “ ‘To My Father, and Your Father,’ ” pp. 829–835, in The Desire of Ages ; “The Gift of the Spirit,” pp. 47–56, in The Acts of the Apostles. The message of Revelation 4 and 5 is particularly important to the people of God living at the close of earth’s history. The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost marked the beginning of the preaching of the gospel to all the world; the central message was about Jesus, who had been exalted as Priest and King at the right hand of the Father. This truth about Jesus was the heart of the early Christians’ belief (Heb. 8:1) and the cornerstone of their preaching (Acts 2:32, 33; Acts 5:30, 31). It also was their motivation and the source of their faith and courage in the face of persecution and difficult life situations (Acts 7:55, 56; Rom. 8:34). As a result, many people responded to their preaching. From that time on, the kingdom of God manifested itself, and keeps on doing so, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We never must forget that it is only the good news of salvation in Christ that can reach and transform human hearts and lead people to respond to the call of the eternal gospel to fear God, give Him glory, and worship Him (Rev. 14:7). Our only hope is in our Savior, who is our Priest and King in the heavenly sanctuary. He is with His people, and He always will be with them until the very end (Matt. 28:20). He holds the future in His hands. Let us, therefore, never forget that keeping the essence of the gospel in mind will bring full success in preaching the final message to lost and suffering humankind. Nothing else we preach is more important than the Cross and what it teaches us about God.

Discussion Questions:  One day we will be in heaven praising and worshiping the Lord for His goodness, His power, and especially His grace. What are ways that, even now, we can get in practice for the time when that great day comes? That is, how can we worship with grateful hearts and praise God now for all that He has done and will do?

 Read Revelation 4:11 and 5:9. In what roles do we see the Father and the Son here, and how are both roles central not just to the plan of salvation but also to why God is so worthy of our worship? How is the Sabbath, and what it teaches, an expression of these two wonderful truths about our God

RADIO LINK LIVE-ADVENTIST ANGELS WATCHMAN

Adventist Angels Watchman

Commission of all disciples of Jesus

Go Ye To All nations, teaching them, baptizing them all i have commanded

Jesus gives strength to Job and Youu

Asking God vs. Asking Satan

Created Free, with a Promise 4 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed!” John 8:36 Asking God vs. Asking Satan All down through history from the time that our first parents rebelled and fell into sin, people have been lured into seeking favors from sources they either knew or suspected were forbidden by God. Why would they do this; and does it really matter if I claim to serve God and yet still seek help from ‘the other side’? Why would God forbid it? In our day all too many folk do not really think about the two sides in the supernatural, nor do they bother to find out about them. Many things today are called ‘unknown powers’ while they are only unknown to those who reject the Bible or do not bother to seriously look into it. In our last few lessons we have seen that there are very clear standards laid down for us to measure these things by, and we can know what God says about the claims and teachings of all these ‘powers’.

In the realm of healing agencies these days there are so many voices shouting out that they have the answers—some are advocating the natural, God-given healing means approved of God; some have a mixture of these and yet they slip in false ideas very subtly. (Remember Satan has to mix some truth with his errors or he would not fool anyone.) Then there are some that are really occult and yet claim to be utilizing ‘energy channels’, ‘hidden powers of the mind’, or ‘secret energies of nature’; then there are those that openly claim to be in touch with great healers and masters that are dead. Now none of us should be fooled by that last one anymore! We know that the dead “know not anything” and the spirits claiming to be dead people are just the angels of Satan playing ‘dress-up games’ to fool people. There are certain realms where people get lured into contact with forbidden or ‘unknown’ powers; perhaps the desire to know the future is one of the main ones. Wa nting advice in making decisions is another; also help with sickness, and then desire for power and riches; communication with dead relatives, and help in getting something we want, but have no right to. The first three we are invited to seek God for, and the last three, we are not to seek. So why do people run boldly to ‘where angels fear to tread’ instead of seeking the Lord in prayer? Let’s look at the tragic story of King Saul; if he would have truly repented and kept seeking the Lord in humility, God would have helped him. But though he admitted his sin somewhat, he never truly repented and when God did not answer him, his stubborn, proud heart determined to get his answer anyway. So he sought the witch, and the evil spirit that pretended to be Samuel, gave him a message that only drove him over into greater darkness and he ended up killing himself. “By the prediction of Saul's doom, given through the woman of Endor, Satan planned to ensnare the people of Israel. He hoped that they would be inspired with confidence in the sorceress, and would be led to consult her. Thus they would turn from God as their counselor and would place themselves under the guidance of Satan. The lure by which spir itualism attracts the multitudes is its pretended power to draw aside the veil from the future and reveal to men what God has hidden. God has in His word opened before us the great events of the future--all that it is essential for us to know--and He Created Free: Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 2 has given us a safe guide for our feet amid all its perils; but it is Satan's purpose to destroy men's confidence in God, to make them dissatisfied with th eir condition in life, and to lead them to seek a knowledge of what God has wisely veiled from them, and to despise what He has revealed in His Holy Word. “There are many who become restless when they cannot know the definite outcome of affairs. They cannot endure uncertainty, and in their impatience th ey refuse to wait to see the salvation of God. Apprehended evils drive them nearly distracted. Th ey give way to their rebellious feelings, and run hither and thither in passionate grief, seeking intelligence concerning that which has not been revealed. If they would but trust in God, and watch unto prayer, they would find divine consolation. Their spirit would be calmed by communion with God. The weary and the heavy-laden would find rest unto their souls if they would only go to Jesus; but when they neglect the means that God has ordained for their comfort, and resort to other sour ces, hoping to learn what God has withheld, they commit the error of Saul, and thereby gain only a knowledge of evil. “God is not pleased with this course, and has expre ssed it in the most explicit terms. This impatient haste to tear away the veil from the future reveals a lack of faith in God and leaves the soul open to the suggestions of the master deceiver. Satan leads me n to consult those that have familiar spirits; and by revealing hidden things of the past, he inspires confidence in his power to foretell things to come. By experience gained through the long ages he can reason from cause to effect and often forecast, with a degree of accuracy, some of the future events of man's life. Thus he is enabled to deceive poor, misguided souls and bring them under his power and lead them captive at his will.” PP 686-687. We are extracting some thoughts from the book “Dows ing” by Ben Hester. This man was rescued from the powers of darkness by the Lord and he seeks to warn others from these dangerous pathways. Dowsing is the act of seeking to find hidden water or other things by use of some device like a forked stick, or pendulum. The subject of ‘Dowsing’ is interesting because many Christians, ministers, and even Adventist pastors practice this and try to claim it is only a natural agency. But what does the Bible show us? The Power Source Identified: “The Bible gives a most positive answer to this . The references may easily be found in both Testaments. They are described, and the inference is clear that they have been a commonplace occurrence in the life of mankind since Adam disobeyed. They are positively identified. There is clear warning that the spirits must be tested to prove their origin before having anything to do with them. The manner of testing them is made plain. The deceiving spirits are identified as evil angels-those who chose to be on the side of Lucifer who became Sata n, and whose one and only intention is to deceive mankind and to lead away from the one true God. “These deceiving spirit entities, benevolent, seemingly honest, sincere and wise, historically and presently lead mankind away from God by being tr uthful just enough to establish acceptance, and then the completely destroying lie is slipped in as innocently as if it were a continuation of the preceding truths. These lies are anti-God, every one of them. “So, there are spirit entities. There are two classes. Only one of them is amoral, lying, and hurtful. They are among us, and have been since Eden. They can mate rialize at will and convince us of reality that is not so. They are masters of the hoax. Eve, our first mother, and presumably the most intelligent wo-man ever to have lived was taken in by the first hoax lie, ". . . ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" without the least hint of the terrible consequences that accompanied the risk. They have been successfully hoaxing the intelligent among us ever since. According to the Bible, they were created as a higher classification of beings than man. Since their rebellion they have used this higher condition (which all of us know well) to defraud us. They fit every known need in an understanding of the occult. We submit that dowsing is an occult act, and has been known as such from ancient times.” The great cry today is to stop co ndemning the unknown. Those who wish to withhold acceptance until identification and proof are forthcoming are ridiculed. Those who warn that these ‘unknown’ things are ‘of the Created Free:
Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 3
devil’ are denounced as extremists, and people have the idea, “If it works, it must be OK even if we don’t understand it.” But friends, don’t we even warn our children to “Never take candy or gifts from strangers”? How much more should we want to make sure who these occult powers are before we accept a gift from them? False prophets resent those who would warn that God has forbidden the very things they are promoting; because they claim to be doing this to ‘help people’, everyone is supposed to accept it completely. But remember, Satan can do good—that first forbidden tree was called “Knowledge of Good and Evil”—but God never lies; He never does, nor will He join in with evil. Asking God vs. Asking Satan: So why would people choose to ask something from the oc cult, when they are invited by God to ask Him for all their needs? We need to think about this more deeply. Why are results from prayer fairly uncommon and result s from requests to the occult power sources often so immediate, satisfactory, and attractive? The answer is found in history. Through the eyes of history, the present-day problem is suddenly made clear. Start with the early Hebrews; the "Children of Israel" made a covenant with God. The dictionary defines a covenant as "a binding and solemn agreement". In this historic covenant the people agreed to keep the "com-mandments" of God, and in return God agreed to keep the people safe, provide a home in the garden land of the world (in what is today a barren desert), and keep them healthy and prosperous. This covenant was for a purpose. These people were to be the earth's leaders, guided by God. What could be more ideal? Yet for some hard-to-understand reason the people broke this covenant time after time. On the surface it would appear that these "chosen people" were so stupid that they were unable to exercise good judgment. However this was not the case; even today, after many hundreds of years away from their original broken covenant, Jews are highly intelligent; So, why did they fail? In ancient Israel’s ‘people-to-God relationship’ the miraculous was almo st commonplace; there was almost direct contact with God through their religious leaders. It seems to us today that this would have been impos-sible to turn from. However, there is evidence that th ere were also miraculous happenings in the pagan world surrounding these people. There is evidence in the biblical references to the other gods, and there was an ongoing Satanic attempt to match the miraculous happenings of the true God relationship. However, there was one vast difference, and this is the key—then and today. God demanded right living, morality, and justice of his people. It was in the covenant. Paganism made no such demands. It fostered unbelievable immorality, licentiousness and freedom from any restraint. If you read about their religious rites it shows a picture of such unbelievable brutality, depravity and gore to be mind-numbing to our present-day morality. This no-restraint society, plus what must have been an impressive display of occult manifestations and the use to which people could put them, appealed to the Israelites and these continually tempting, no-restraint religions, were just a step across the border. This is why God had told them to completely drive out these nations! The difference in religions is still with us today, even if we do not see the extremes or the supernatural manifestations today, the opposing forces are still there, and the same offer of benefits from the supernatural without any condition of right living is the same old temptation to paganism. To come before God and be heard, still requires re pentance, confession, and obedience. It includes a willingness to accept responsibility and giving over the will to God. So much false Christian teaching we are Created Free:
Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 4

given today is sort of a total immersion in a gigantic love blob they call God, without any mention of the responsibility following conversion. It certainly shows up wh en answer to prayer is demanded; the reality is so different from the emotional theory. "Thy will be done" is the most difficu lt prayer to learn. None of this is a problem in approaching the occult for f avors. No right living; no change of character; not even the intention to do good, is required. And it is all bu ttered over with friendliness and good will. It is easy, immediate and inviting. “Come and talk to the spirits wi th us. Come join our humanism. Come practice sorcery (dowsing) with us. Come join us in our feasting and pa gan celebrations. We are such friendly, down to earth people. We are your brothers.” This invitation is as old as mankind. This is why, no matter if you are a good or evil man, you can practice divination successfully; you can get involved in the occult, it seems so easy. Is there any danger if we get a favor from ‘unknown’ or occult sources? It is all a matter of choosing whom you will serve. It is a fact that any involvement with the occult implies required loyalty to those powers. Whether you do or not, Satan considers this an agreement to serve on his side of the battle between good and evil. This whole idea is no longer a nightmare of the middle ages. The story-book idea of selling oneself to Satan fo r success is popular among the youth again today. Witchcraft is very much with us still, and the participants are proud and public about it. It is blatantly present in the rock music scene with stars confessing spirit instructions, dictation of words, music and inspiration. The average rock listener ri dicules this "superstitious" stuff, but those who have been in the professional scene and have had enough and have gotten out, tell it as it is. The acceptance of occult favors is no less than an agreement to serve these powers. “We know of people involved in the occult who are the most happy, loving, carefree, successful persons one could hope to find. They are walking advertisements for the desirability of such a life. They are valuable to Satan, and may continue to be so for some time to come. However, they are subject to sudden abandonment and any attempt to welch, cheat, or escape is dealt with mercilessly. The incidence of insanity and/or suicide runs high among those attempting such foolishness. “This writer is no armchair philosopher, savoring the taste of these stories and ideas, and spitting them out for your entertainment (or disgust). We have been there personally and have survived the hell of escape. We were reduced eventually to the level of an animal trying to hide and enduring the panic of finding no hiding place. Then someone suggested prayer in the name of Jesus Christ and it was tried as a drowning man grasps a thrown rope, and that release and escape was effected (and) has been the subject of daily thanksgiving during the ensuing years.” Steps into the Occult We are not suggesting that picking up the dowsing rod or calling in a witcher to locate a water well will certainly result in suicide or insanity. We do say it is the first step in the wrong direction. One can never be sure when the next step will be presente d, and just how tempting it will be. It is certain that the next step will be presented sooner or later. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." This is the one unchangeable aspect of the least involvement with the occult. The following steps are not always experienced in the orde r we list them, but generally there is a logical order, one building on the last. Created Free: Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 5
1. Dowsing, using the Ouija Board, going to a 'reader', fortune teller, etc. Involvement with Halloween can be a first step also. 2. An opportunity that can be seized only through furthe r occult means. For instance, if one happens to be in need of further information that cannot be gotten in the yes and no answers of the dowsing device, it may be suggested that a visit to a medium will provide an an swer. By this time, that extra bit of information has become so necessary, this step is almost impossible to refuse. 3. After having experienced steps one and two, this important and most attractive new possibility to get information and advice is almost impossible to turn away from. This results in more active participation in other exciting psychic activities. 4. Some occult ability will suddenly be received. It may be telepathy, knowledge from the past; or glimpses into the future, and one is suddenly an active participant in occult manifestations. 5. The final step will be the preparat ion or indoctrination to receive a "control" or "guide" or "familiar spirit". This may start through vivid and unusual dreams, unexpected and alien (important) ideas, a distinct mental impression (astonishingly different from the usual), a nd finally, the awareness of something or someone (a presence) nearby, generally at the right hand side. Eventually, after a time of introduction, the ‘guide’ will establish an acceptable and recognizable method of communication. 6. Then, although the recipient is not only unaware of th e danger, and will not turn back even if warned, the trouble starts.
The guide starts giving advice. This advice is valuable, re sulting in all sorts of advantages and good things. Then, if the advice is not taken, the guide pushes a little for compliance. Then the advice changes to demands—all for the 'good' of the recipient. The dema nds become stronger and instructions are given as though they must be followed. The person may resist, become angry, and demand to be left alone. It does absolutely no good, because although the guide will back off, it returns again and again endlessly, and there is no way to escape. It ends by demanding control of every decision, action, thought and wish. “The person who has had no brush with spiritism will find these details impossible to ac cept as reality. To this person, what we have written on this subject may easily seem to be ridiculous imag ination. However, there is one type of reader who will recognize every detail, fo r it will be as though we recounted his personal experience. “This is not all. The rest of the picture we have witnesse d personally. The person so afflicted begins to lose his own personality, and the change is noticeable to the horror of his relatives and friends. The person withdraws more and more from old associations because he or she recognizes what is happening and cannot control it. A different personality emerges and fear lives with him day and night. “At any time during this whole process a person, in desp eration, may successfully turn to God for escape, but the further one goes into the occult, the more awful he ll one experiences in the fight to break free and the longer it takes. The spirit will be expelled only to retu rn the moment the person's faith wavers, and it must be done all over again. Obviously, the whole thing can, and sometimes does, end in total 'possession' and the person becomes a thing, a zombie, inhabited by an evil spirit that is sadistic and absolutely merciless. (Like the demoniacs in the Bible!) “If the reader feels that this is a cheap attempt to fright en, he is half right. It is not cheap however, for reality never is. This is no witch's tale. It is the absolute truth. We only write it because we are driven by actuality, and with the help and daily protection of God. What we cannot say strongly enough is do not take that first step, and if you have already, wherever you are, turn to God again quickly!” Ben Hester. Maybe the above information will show why God has so strongly forbidden us to get involved in any occult practices? It is because He knows what liars these beings are, and the harm they want to do to His children and He earnestly wants to protect us! Did you know that God’s messenger Sister White was shown one of Satan’s planning sessions? Yes indeed! Here is part of what she wrote about what she saw.
Created Free: Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 6 Snares of Satan Selected from the 1884 Gre at Controversy Chapter 27
“And (Jesus) said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven!” Luke 10:18 God does not sit down with Satan and inform him of His plans for the future; nor would He reply to him if he were to ask. No one would disclose a battle plan to th e enemy, would they? So basically, Satan has to get his information from the same source as we do; from the in spired writings. (However, he does not have the Holy Spirit to help him like we do.) Oh yes! Satan studies th e Bible because in spite of all the efforts the fallen angels make to get people to throw it away, they KNOW it is true, and they try to use it in a twisted way to trick people, just like Satan tried with Jesus! “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19. “As the people of God approach the perils of the last da ys, Satan holds earnest consultation with his angels as to the most successful plan of overthrowing their faith. He sees that the popular churches are already lulled to sleep by his deceptive power. By pleasing sophistry and lying wonders he can continue to hold them under his control. Therefore he directs his angels to lay their sn ares especially for those who are looking for the second advent of Christ, and endeavoring to keep all the commandments of God. “Says the great deceiver: "We must watch those who are calling the attention of the people to the Sabbath of Jehovah; they will lead many to see the claims of the law of God; and the same light which reveals the true Sabbath, reveals also the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, and shows that the last work for man's salvation is now going forward. Hold the minds of the people in darkness till that work is ended, and we shall secure the world and the church also. "The Sabbath is the great question which is to decide the destiny of souls. We must exalt the Sabbath of our creating. We have caused it to be accepted by both worldlings and church-members; now the church must be led to unite with the world in its support. We must work by signs and wonders to blind their eyes to the truth, and lead them to lay aside reason and the fear of God, and follow custom and tradition. "I will influence popular ministers to turn the attention of their hearers from the commandments of God. That which the Scriptures declare to be a perfect law of liberty shall be represented as a yoke of bondage. The people accept their ministers' explanations of Scriptur e, and do not investigate for themselves. Therefore by working through the ministers, I can control the people according to my will. "But our principal concern is to silence this sect of Sabbath-keepers. We must excite popular indignation against them. We will enlist great men and worldly-wise men upon our side, and induce those in authority to carry out our purposes. Then the Sabbath which I have set up shall be enforced by laws the most severe and exacting. Those who disregard them shall be driven out from the cities and villages, and made to suffer hunger and privation. When once we have the power, we will show that we can do with those who will not swerve from their allegiance to God. We led the Romish Church to inflict imprisonment, torture, and death upon those who refused to yield to her decrees, an d now that we are bringing the Protestant churches and the world into harmony with this right arm of our strength, we will fina lly have a law to exterminate all who will not submit to our authority. When death shall be made the penalty of violating our Sabbath, then many who are now ranked with commandment-keepers will come over to our side. "But before proceeding to these extreme measures, we must exert all our wisdom and subtlety to deceive and ensnare those who honor the true Sabbath. We can separate many from Christ by worldliness, lust, and pride. They may think themselves safe because they believe the truth, but indulgence of appetite or the lower passions, which will confuse judgment and de stroy discrimination, will cause their fall. "Go, make the possessors of lands and money drunk with the cares of this life. Present the world before them in its most attractive light, that they may lay up their treasure here, and fix their affections upon earthly things. We must do our utmost to prevent those who labor in God's cause from obtaining means to use against us.

Created Free: Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 7
Keep the money in our own ranks. The more means they obtain, the more they will injure our kingdom by taking from us our subjects. Make them care more fo r money than for the upbuilding of Christ's kingdom and the spread of the truths we hate, and we need not fe ar their influence; for we know that every selfish, covetous person will fall under our power, and w ill finally be separated from God's people. "Through those that have a form of godliness but know not the power, we can gain many who would otherwise do us great harm. Lovers of pleasure more th an lovers of God will be our most effective helpers. Those of this class who are apt and intelligent will serve as decoys to draw others into our snares. Many will not fear their influence, because they profess the same faith. We will thus lead th em to conclude that the requirements of Christ are less strict than they once believed, and that by conformity to the world they would exert a greater influence with worldlings. Thus they will separate from Christ; then they will have no strength to resist our power, and erelong they will be ready to ridicule their former zeal and devotion.

"Until the great decisive blow shall be struck, our efforts against commandment-keepers must be untiring. We must be present at all their gatherings. In their large meetings especially our cause will suffer much, and we must exercise great vigilance, and employ all our seductive arts to prevent souls from hearing the truth and becoming impressed by it. "I will have upon the ground, as my agents, men hold ing false doctrines mingled with just enough truth to deceive souls. I will also have unbelieving ones presen t, who will express doubts in regard to the Lord's messages of warning to his church. Should the people re ad and believe these admonitions, we could have little hope of overcoming them. But if we can divert their a ttention from these warnings, they will remain ignorant of our power and cunning, and we shall secure them in ou r ranks at last. God will not permit his words to be slighted with impunity. If we can keep souls deceived for a time, God's mercy will be withdrawn, and he will give them up to our full control. "We must cause distraction and division. We must destroy their anxiety for their own souls, and lead them to criticise, to judge, and to accuse and condemn one an other, and to cherish selfishness and enmity. For these sins, God banished us from his presence; and all who follow our example will meet a similar fate."

… “The followers of Christ know little of the pl ots which Satan and his hosts are forming against them. But He who sitteth in the heavens will overrule all these devices for the accomplishment of his deep designs. The Lord permits his people to be subjected to the fiery ordeal of temptation, not because he takes pleasure in their distress and affliction, but because this process is essential to their final victory. He could not, consistently with his own glory, shield them from temptation; for the very object of the trial is to prepare them to resist all the allurements of evil.

“Satan is well aware that the weakest soul who abides in Christ is more than a match for the hosts of darkness, and that, should he reveal himself openly, he would be met and resisted. Therefore he seeks to draw away the soldiers of the cross from their strong fortification, while he lies in ambush with his forces, ready to destroy all who venture upon his ground. No man is safe for a day or an hour without prayer. Especially should we entreat the Lord for wisdom to understand his word. Satan is an expert in quoting Scripture, placing his own interpretation upon passages by which he hopes to cause us to stumble. We should study the Bible with humility of heart, never losing sight of our dependence upon God. While we must constantly guard against the devices of Satan, we should pray in faith continually, "Lead us not into temptation."”
Created Free: Lesson 4 http://www.hygienic-healing.com 8 Asking God for Help:
If we truly choose to belong to the Lord and obey Him, we are never left where we cannot call out to Him in prayer and receive help. Here is an experience that Sister White had in her early ministry when, as still only a girl, she had to face a lot of both human and satanic attacks. “While visiting my sisters in Poland, (USA) I was a fflicted with sickness. Those present united in prayer in my behalf, and the disease was rebuked. Angels seemed to be in the room, and all was light and glory. I was again taken off in vision, and shown that I must go about three miles to a meeting, and when there should learn what the Lord would have me do. We went, and found quite a large gathering of the brethren and sisters. None had known of an y special meeting. J.T. was there. He had boasted that he understood the art of mesmerism, and that he could mesmerize me; that he could prevent me from having a vision or relating a vision in his presence. There were many present who had heard this boast. I arose in the congregation. My visions came up fresh before me, and I commenced relating them, when I felt a human influence being exerted against me. I looked at J.T. He had his hand up to his face, and was looking through his fingers, his eyes intently fixed upon me. His lips were compressed, and a low groan now and then escape d him. In a moment I remembered the promise which the Lord had given me, that if I was in danger of being affected by a human influence, and would ask for another angel, one would be sent to protect me. I then turned to this man, and related what the Lord had shown me in Portland; and, raising my hands to heaven, earnestly cried, ‘Another angel, Father! another angel!’ I knew that my request was granted. I felt shielded by the strong Spirit of the Lord, and was borne above every earthly influence, and with freedom finished my testimony. The friends were comforted, and rejoiced in the Lord. J.T. was asked why he had not stopped my relating the vision. He answered, ‘Oh, some of you would have her talk.’ We returned to my sister's with strong confidence, rejoicing in God.” Life Sketches 88 223.

If we find ourselves facing trials and occult threats we too can ask the Lord for help and protection and for ‘an extra angel’. However, if we choose to play games with the enemy, we can be put into serious danger. If you have been involved in seeking after any kind of services or contact with things you now know are from occult sources, then do not wait any longer, repent and ask forgiveness from our loving Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus and ask for special help to cut loose from any ties you have to them. Also you must get rid of any object you may have in your home or any possession that is in any way linked to these things.

Come to Jesus fully and give Him all you heart and life— He is an ever-present help in trouble and you will never regret this choice! So, just how can we have this special relationship with our loving God? Obviously, the more we can learn about our wonderful God, the happier and healthier we will be; so for our next lessons we will explore extracts from a little book written by Glenn and Ethy l Coon back in the 1960s, called “The God I Love.” In these lessons we also are go ing to learn a lot more abou t the “Science of Prayer” and how to claim God’s precious promises to solve our problems and meet our needs. You have a real treat in store for you; but first we will repeat our special le sson on the ABC’s of prayer; so see you next week!

Behold Jesus comes quickly

Revelation 22:¶ And, behold, I come quickly ; and my reward is with me, to giveevery man according as his work shall be.I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first andthe last.¶ Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may haveright to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into thecity.

May 27, 1895

Proof?óHere it is: " Penance , by which

the sins that we commit after baptism are forgiven."

"The sacrament of penance, in which the forgiveness of sins is granted to the penitent."ó Catholic Belief, pp. 80, 366. One of these says that penance is the means by which the sins that we commit "after baptism " are forgiven. It is, therefore, important to know when, according to that system, baptism is to be administered; and by this to know how many sins can be committed before baptism. Here is the authoritative statement on that point:ó

"From what has been said, you may well judge how reprehensible is the conduct of Catholic parents who neglect to have their children baptized at the earliest possible moment , thereby risking their own souls, as well as the souls of their innocent offspring."óFaith of Our Fathers , p. 313.

WHAT IS PENANCE Penance being the means of justification, the way of salvation from sin, what then is penance? Here is the authoritative answer:ó "In the case of those who have fallen into mortal sin after baptism, when the guilt of such sin and the everlasting punishment due to it are forgiven, there still very often remains a debt of temporal punishment , to be paid by the sinner.

This debt remains, not from any imperfection in the power of absolution in the sacrament of penance, nor from any want of efficacy in the atonement of Jesus Christ; but because by God's will, chastisement for past sins helps us to compensate for the imperfection in our repentance, and serves as a correction.óCatholic Belief, p. 191.

Now, what does the sinner's salvation turn? and who is his saviour?óPlainly his salvation turns altogether upon the punishment; and as this debt of punishment is to be paid by the sinner himself, it just as certainly follows that the sinner is his own saviour. And thus penance, punishment, is the papal way of salvation. Nor is this all; but the Lord Himself is made responsible for it, so that it is literally set forth as the divine way of salvation and the divine means of justification.

For it is plainly said that this debt of punishment, to be paid by the guiltless sinner, remains "because by God's will chastisement for past sins helps us to compensate [to pay] for the imperfection in our repentance, and serves as a correction." As the Lord forgives both the guilt and the everlasting punishment of the sin, and yet by his own will has fixed it that the sinner must still pay a debt of punishment in order to be justified and saved, then it is certain that according to the papal system, God has made punishment, which is penance, the means of justification and the way of salvation. And indeed this is also further stated by this same authority, as follows:ó

From this we see that . . . He has not dispensed us from doing with the help of His grace what we can to punish ourselves for the offences and outrages we have offered to God. Good sense tells us that this is both right and just."óp. 192. Everybody who will think on the subject can easily enough see that instead of its being good sense, it is an utter lack of every element of sound sense that tells a man that it is in any sense either right or just that he should punish himself to save himself from himself. So essentially is punishment of penance that the papal way of salvation that even the dying thief, whom the Lord Jesus himself pardoned on the cross, is made to do penance. Here are the words:
ó

"The pardon granted to the penitent thief in the saving words: 'Amen, I says to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in Paradise' (Luke 23:43), can not be taken as proof that we are dispensed by God from doing works of penance. That was a wonderful and special grace granted under extraordinary circumstances, namely, when the blood of redemption was actually being shed upon the cross; moreover, the dying thief, besides bearing testimony to the divinity of Jesus Christ, confessed his guilt, and, in the spirit of penance, suffered the torment of his crucifixion, and the cruel breaking of his limbs, as penalties justly due to his sins.óp. 193.

A DOCTRINE THAT MISREPRESENTS GOD This doctrine that men must punish themselves to save themselves springs from the utterly false, even heathenish, idea that God is harsh, stern, forbidding, and exacting, instead of gentle, loving, winning, and merciful. It looks upon him as so ill-tempered and stern that He has to be "moved" by men's doings so well that they get Him into a good humour, and by punishment making themselves such pitiable objects that he can finally be persuaded to yield and "save" them. And here is that thought authoritatively expressed:ó

"We stand in continual need of actual graces to perform good acts, both before and after being justified. . . . The good acts, however, done by the help of grace before justification, are not, strictly speaking, meritorious, but serve to smooth the way to justification, to move God."ópp. 76, 77. Thus by her own showing, the god of the Papacy is of such a disposition and character that it is necessary for men , wicked men, to do "good acts" in order to move him; and then, after they have thus moved him, it is still essential that they shall pay "a debt of temporal punishment," in order to induce him to allow them the justification which they have so hardly earned. To such a god as that it is no wonder that the Inquisition is a pleasing tribute. This is self-salvation as set forth by the Papacy. We will in our next article consider a few scriptures setting forth God's way of saving men.

Mission Reading---A Second Life

A Second LifeTwo paths lay before Peter: to stay in the hospital, spending money and putting a bigger burden on his parents, and finally to die, or to trust God.Fast Facts More Christians live in China than in Italy, and China is on track to become the largest center of Christianity in the world. You are so unfair to me!” He wept bitterly and briefly considered committing suicide by jumping off the bridge.

At his parents’ insistence, Peter checked into the village hospital for treatment. The hospital conditions were poor; the family could not afford to send Peter to a better-equipped city hospital.

After three days, Peter’s mother went to church to ask the pastor to pray for her son. She sometimes attended the church on Sundays, and she thought in her grief that it was Sunday. But it was Saturday, and the Seventh-day Adventists who shared the church with the Sunday worshippers were startled to hear her wailing in the sanctuary when they arrived for Sabbath School. An elderly woman asked, “Why are you so sad?” Upon hearing about Peter, the woman said, “Don’t worry. Ask your son to trust God. God will save him.”

Later that day, the elderly woman visited Peter in his hospital room and offered him the same advice. “Young man, trust God,” she said. “God will save you.”

The advice was difficult for Peter to accept. His teachers had taught him since first grade that God does not exist.

At that point, two paths lay before Peter: to stay in the hospital, spending money and putting a bigger burden on his parents, and finally to die, or to trust God.

“I didn’t want to put a bigger burden on my parents,” Peter said. “So, I said, ‘I will try to trust God. I choose to trust God rather than the doctors.’”

That afternoon, Peter decided that since God exists and could be trusted to provide healing, he would leave the hospital. He rejected his mother’s appeals to take his medicine home.

“We trust God,” he said. “Let’s leave everything here.”

The elderly Adventist told Peter about a church-owned sanitarium in another village, and he decided to go there. The sanitarium staff welcomed him warmly.

“When I was sick and hopeless, I needed comfort, but everyone left me,” Peter said. “But when I reached that sanatorium, all the people there knelt with me and prayed for me. When they prayed, they cried, ‘God, please help this young man.’ They accepted me and loved me.”

Peter had never experienced such love before and sensed that it was more than human. It was divine. He stayed at the sanitarium for two months, praying, studying the Bible, and learning a healthy lifestyle. “I forgot that I was sick,” Peter said. “I was very happy.”

After two months, he asked the sanitarium director for permission to return to the hospital for a checkup. The results shocked him—and his doctor. He received a bill of clean health. The doctor couldn’t understand how the poor medicine that he had prescribed had cured him. But Peter had not taken the medicine. He had trusted God.

Peter’s was baptized, and his parents and grandparents also were baptized. Today, Peter is a 40-year-old Bible worker in China.

“Since God gave me a second life, I have devoted this life to Him,” he said.

Because of the sensitive nature of this story, no photos are being offered this week.

The Three Angels Message To The World

A falling away first,..Risen Antichrist

Welcome to Adventist Angels Watchman Radio

Watchman Upon The Wall

Restoring Image of God in man as In Genesis so to Revelation call

Bible study One

The Book of Acts

During those years, he had several hearings in which he would appear before two Roman governors (Felix and Festus) and a king (Agrippa II), thus further fulfilling the ministry that God gave him (Acts 9:15).

In all the hearings, Paul always claimed innocence, alleging that no evidence could be produced against him, as the absence of witnesses demonstrated. In fact, the whole narrative is intended to show that Paul had done nothing worthy of arrest and that he could be released had he not appealed to Caesar (Acts 26:32). These hearings, though, did offer him opportunities to witness about Jesus and the great hope found in the promise of the resurrection.

Yet, those were still years of deep anxiety, as well as of tedious confinement in which the apostle seems to have had no support of any kind from the church in Jerusalem, whose leaders “still cherished a feeling that Paul should be held largely responsible for the existing prejudice.”—Ellen G. White, The Acts of the Apostles, p. 403.

Study this week’s lesson to prepare for Sabbath, September 22.

Sunday ↥ September 16

Before Felix

Five days after Paul’s transfer to Caesarea, a group of important Jewish leaders—the high priest, some members of the Sanhedrin, and a professional lawyer named Tertullus—came down from Jerusalem and formally laid before Felix their case against the apostle (Acts 24:1-9).

This is the only trial in Acts in which the accusers employed a lawyer. In his speech, Tertullus tried an interesting strategy to win the governor’s favor. It was simply not true that, under Felix, the Jews had enjoyed a long period of peace. In fact, no other governor had been so repressive and violent, and this repression generated an enormous antagonism among the Jews toward Roman rule. With a lot of ingenuity, Tertullus used the governor’s own administrative policy to convince him that he would achieve political stability in this case also only by means of severe repression.

Then, he went on to press three specific charges against Paul: (1) that Paul was an agitator who was constantly fomenting unrest among Jews throughout the empire (Acts 24:5); (2) that he was a ringleader of the Nazarenes (Acts 24:5), which implicated Christianity as a whole as a kind of disruptive movement; and (3) that he had attempted to defile the Jerusalem temple (Acts 24:6).

Read Acts 24:10-19. How did Paul answer each one of the charges?

Two further points raised by Paul were devastating to the accusers’ case: (1) the absence of the Asian witnesses (Acts 24:18, 19), which had the potential of rendering the trial invalid, and (2) the fact that the Jews there could speak only about Paul’s hearing before the Sanhedrin the week before (Acts 24:20), and as such they had nothing to accuse him of except that he believed in the resurrection of the dead (compare with Acts 23:6).

Felix immediately understood the weight of Paul’s arguments, also because he was somewhat acquainted with Christianity, probably through his Jewish wife Drusilla. The fact is that he decided to adjourn the proceedings until further notice (Acts 24:22).

Felix’s response (Acts 24:24-27) revealed much about his character: he procrastinated, he was able to be bribed, and he was opportunistic. Paul had little chance of a fair hearing with someone like Felix.

Read Acts 24:16. Paul said that he strove always to have a “conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.” What does that mean? What, if anything, would you have to change in order to say the same thing?

Monday ↥ September 17

Before Festus

After two years holding Paul in prison just to win the favor of the Jews, Felix was replaced by Porcius Festus as the governor of Judea (Acts 24:27). Festus ruled from A.D. 60 to 62.

Read Acts 25:1-5. How does this help reveal the hatred that preaching the truth can cause in those who don’t want to believe it?

Probably because they had already failed once in their attempt to convince Felix of the charges against Paul, the leaders did not want to take any chances again. In what appears to have been Festus’ first visit to Jerusalem, they requested, as a favor to them, a change of jurisdiction, asking him to hand Paul back to them so he could be tried by the Sanhedrin in accordance with Jewish law.

Yet, the request was only a camouflage to conceal their real intent: to kill Paul. Although Festus was willing to reopen the case, he said that the hearing would take place in Caesarea, not in Jerusalem, which means that Paul would be tried by Roman law.

As soon as Festus was back in Caesarea, he convened the tribunal, and Paul’s opponents started laying out the charges against Paul (Acts 25:7). This time Luke does not repeat the charges, but based on Paul’s answer (Acts 25:8) we can see that they were similar to the ones of two years before, perhaps with the further emphasis that, for being an agitator, Paul also represented a threat to the empire.

Read Acts 25:9-12. When sensing that Festus could use him for political reasons, how did Paul react?

In the end, Festus turned out not much different from Felix with regard to his political strategies (Acts 24:27). Unwilling to lose the Jews’ support so early in his administration by declaring Paul innocent, he thought of granting them their original request: to have the apostle tried by the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem.

This, however, was not acceptable to Paul, who knew he could not expect to be treated fairly there, left to the whim of his enemies. So, capitalizing on his Roman rights, he insisted that he was entitled to be tried by a Roman tribunal, and envisaging no other way out of that precarious situation, he resolved to appeal to the highest instance of Roman justice, which was the emperor himself.

Tuesday ↥ September 18

Before Agrippa

Festus agreed to grant Paul’s request to be sent to Rome (Acts 25:12). Meanwhile, the governor took advantage of a state visit by Herod Agrippa II to consult him concerning Paul’s case, in particular regarding what kind of information he should send to the emperor in his official report. Festus was not yet acquainted enough with Jewish affairs, and Agrippa could certainly help him (Acts 26:2, 3).

Read Acts 25:13-22. What did Festus tell Agrippa about Paul, and how did the king respond?

Agrippa II, the last of the Herodians, came to Caesarea with his sister Bernice to salute the new governor.

In his description of Paul’s case, Festus revealed his surprise that the charges against him were not related to any capital offense, whether political or criminal. Instead, they had to do with matters concerning Jewish religion, in particular a certain Jesus, “who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive” (Acts 25:19, ESV). Paul had already stated before the Sanhedrin that he was on trial because of his belief in Jesus’ resurrection, and now Festus made it clear that this was indeed the real point at issue.

Read Acts 25:23-27. How does Luke describe the ceremony in which Paul appeared before Agrippa?

“And now Paul, still manacled, stood before the assembled company. What a contrast was here presented! Agrippa and Bernice possessed power and position, and because of this they were favored by the world. But they were destitute of the traits of character that God esteems. They were transgressors of His law, corrupt in heart and life. Their course of action was abhorred by heaven.”—Ellen G. White, The Acts of the Apostles, p. 434.

What should this story teach us about how outward appearances, which may be pleasing to human sight, can often be deceptive about the reality behind the appearance? What about ourselves, too? How different is the appearance from the reality?

Wednesday ↥ September 19

Paul’s Defense

With the scene set and the royal guests seated alongside the governor, the prisoner was brought in to present his defense, which was aimed primarily at Agrippa, as Festus had already heard it before (Acts 25:8-11).

Read Acts 26:1-23. What was Paul doing in his speech before Agrippa?

Paul’s speech was in fact an autobiographical report of his life both before and after his conversion. In terms of content, it recalls the one in Acts 22:1-21, which he spoke before the crowd in Jerusalem.

The apostle began by trying to secure Agrippa’s favor. He acknowledged his gratitude for the opportunity to state his case before such an eminent person, all the more so because Agrippa was well acquainted with all the customs and issues related to Jewish religion. For that reason, Agrippa could be of great assistance in helping the Roman governor understand that the charges brought against him had no merit and were false.

The speech can be divided into three parts. In part one (Acts 26:4-11), Paul described his former Pharisaic piety, which was widely known among his contemporaries in Jerusalem. As a Pharisee, he believed in the resurrection of the dead, which was essential to the fulfilment of Israel’s ancestral hope. The Jews, therefore, were being inconsistent in opposing his teaching, for there was nothing in it that was not fundamentally Jewish. But he understood their attitude quite well, and that was because he himself had once found it so incredible that God could have raised Jesus that even he persecuted those who believed that way.

In part two (Acts 26:12-18), Paul reported how his perspective had changed since his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus and the call that he received to take the gospel message to the Gentiles.

Paul says, finally, that the impact of what he had seen (Acts 26:19-23) was such that he had no choice but to obey and to carry out his missionary activity, the only reason that he was now on trial. The real issue behind his arrest, therefore, was not that he had violated the Jewish law or desecrated the temple. Rather, it was because of his message of Jesus’ death and resurrection, which was in full harmony with the Scriptures and allowed believing Gentiles to have an equal share in salvation.

Read Acts 26:18. According to that text, what happens to those who have salvation in Christ? How have you experienced this reality?

Thursday ↥ September 20

Paul Before the Leaders

Although Paul was speaking to Agrippa, Festus was the first to react, as seen in Acts 26:24. Festus would have had no problem if Paul had spoken about the immortality of the soul, but even the ancient Greco-Romans knew that both concepts—immortality and resurrection—do not go along well with one other. Thus, they kept the former and rejected the latter. This is why Paul says elsewhere that the gospel was foolishness to Gentiles (1 Cor. 1:23).

In a respectful manner, Paul defended the sanity of his ideas and turned to Agrippa, a Jew who could not only understand him but also who could confirm that what he was saying was in agreement with the Hebrew prophets (Acts 26:25, 26).

Read What was Agrippa’s response to Paul’s pressing question?

Paul’s question put Agrippa in a difficult position. As a Jew, he would never deny his belief in the Scriptures; on the other hand, if he gave an affirmative answer, there would be no option but for him to accept Jesus as the Messiah. His reply was a clever escape from the logical trap he was in: “Are you so quickly persuading me to become a Christian?“ (Acts 26:28, NRSV; compare with ESV, NIV)—this is a better translation of the Greek than the traditional, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian“ (NKJV).

Paul’s rejoinder reveals an impressive level of commitment to the gospel: “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also all who are listening to me today might become such as I am—except for these chains“ (Acts 26:29, NRSV). In his last words in that hearing, the apostle did not plead to be free, free as were those listening to him. Instead, he wished they could be like him, except for the chains on his arms. Paul’s missionary zeal greatly surpassed his care for his own safety.

Read Acts 26:30-32. How did Agrippa express his conviction of Paul’s innocence?

Festus needed Agrippa’s help only to fill in the report (Acts 25:25-27). Paul’s appeal to Caesar had already been formally granted (Acts 25:12). The prisoner was no longer under the governor’s jurisdiction.

Read Acts 26:24-28. What did Paul ultimately appeal to, and what should this tell us about what our final authority in matters of faith should always be?

Friday ↥ September 21

Further Thought: “Did the mind of Agrippa at these words revert to the past history of his family, and their fruitless efforts against Him whom Paul was preaching? Did he think of his great-grandfather Herod, and the massacre of the innocent children of Bethlehem? of his great-uncle Antipas, and the murder of John the Baptist? of his own father, Agrippa I, and the martyrdom of the apostle James? Did he see in the disasters which speedily befell these kings an evidence of the displeasure of God in consequence of their crimes against His servants? Did the pomp and display of that day remind Agrippa of the time when his own father, a monarch more powerful than he, stood in that same city, attired in glittering robes, while the people shouted that he was a god? Had he forgotten how, even before the admiring shouts had died away, vengeance, swift and terrible, had befallen the vainglorious king? Something of all this flitted across Agrippa’s memory; but his vanity was flattered by the brilliant scene before him, and pride and self-importance banished all nobler thoughts.”—Ellen G. White Comments, The SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 6, pp. 1066, 1067.

Discussion Questions:

In class, discuss Paul’s decision to appeal to Caesar. Was this decision correct (compare with Acts 25:25; 26:31, 32)? To what extent can we legitimately make strategic decisions to protect ourselves instead of relying entirely on God’s care?Reflect on Paul’s statement to Agrippa: “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision“ (Acts 26:19, NKJV). What does it tell us about Paul? How faithful are we to our missionary calling as Christians (1 Pet. 2:9, 10)?Paul had a passion for people—not for numbers, but for people. In his final hearing in Caesarea, he said to his audience that his heart’s desire was that all of them would be like him; that is, saved by God’s grace (Acts 26:29). He did not wish his own freedom or justice more than he wished them to experience God’s salvation. What can we learn from his example here? How much are we willing to sacrifice in order to see the gospel spread?Agrippa had a chance to hear the gospel right from the mouth of Paul. And yet, he rejected it. How can we be careful not to miss great opportunities when they appear right before us? That is, how can we stay spiritually attuned to the realities around us?

Inside Story~

Going House to House

By Andrew McChesney, Adventist Mission

Kiyong Kwon, a business owner in South Korea, decided that he and other church members needed to go house to house to share the gospel and fill a church that he had planted.

“House-to-house work is difficult”, Kiyong said. “Most people are not home during the day. Those who are usually don’t want to talk. But I obeyed Ellen White’s advice.”

That advice is found in Ellen White’s book Christian Service, p. 113, and reads, “Of equal importance with special public efforts is house-to-house work in the homes of the people. In large cities there are certain classes that cannot be reached by public meetings. These must be searched out as the shepherd searches for his lost sheep.”

So, every Thursday, Kiyong and other church members went from house to house. They didn’t carry religious literature or offer Bible studies. Instead, they asked, “How can help you and your family?”

One day, Kiyong pressed many doorbells without any response. But the front door swung open at one house, and the woman standing there said, “Come in.”

Kiyong entered the house but expressed shock at the instant invitation. “Do you know who I am?” he said. “Why did you let me in?”

“I know that you are evangelizing”, she said.

“But most people reject me”, he persisted. “Why do you accept me?”

The woman explained that she had dreamed that night that a tall stranger would visit. In the dream, the tall man had opened her front door and told her, “Come out! Hurry!”

“When you pressed the door bell”, she said, “I saw you on the intercom TV screen, and you looked tall. So, I let you in.”

Kiyong, growing more surprised by the minute, asked whether he could help the woman or her family.

“My daughter is depressed”, the woman said. “She refuses to go out. Please help her.”

“Bring your daughter to the living room”, Kiyong said.

“No, my daughter refuses to come out of her room.”

“It will be different this time”, Kiyong said. “Just tell her to come out.”

Surprisingly, the daughter came to the living room, and Kiyong prayed and read the Bible with her.

He returned the next Thursday and read the Bible with her again. The daughter started attending church and was baptized.

“This has been my experience repeatedly”, Kiyong said. “It is God who does the mission. He deserves all the glory.”

Kiyong Kwon, 56, left, has planted three churches in South Korea. Part of this quarter’s Thirteenth Sabbath Offering will help plant the first Adventist church in Sejong, South Korea. Yet he inherited no more natural goodness than did Cain. Seth, like Cain, inherited the fallen nature of his parents. But he received also the knowledge of the Redeemer and instruction in righteousness. He labored, as Abel would have done,to turn the minds of sinful men to revere and obey their Creator.

“To Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah.” The distinction between the two classes became more marked—an open profession of loyalty to God on the part of one, contempt and disobedience on the part of the other.

Before the Fall, our first parents had kept the Sabbath, which was instituted in Eden, and after their expulsion from Paradise they continued its observance. They had learned what every one will sooner or later learn, that the divine precepts are sacred and immutable and that the penalty of transgression will surely be inflicted. The Sabbath was honored by all who remained loyal to God. But Cain and his descendants did not respect the day upon which God had rested.

Why Bible is unique by Ellen G White

1904WEST MICHIGAN Herald October 26, 1904October 26, 1904WMHerald October 26, 1904The Book of BooksWMHerald October 26, 1904EGWAll would pronounce the Bible the most interesting book they ever perused if their imagination had not become perverted by exciting stories of a fictitious character.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 1If we study the word of God with interest, and pray to understand it, new beauties will be seen in every line. God will reveal precious truths so clearly that the mind will derive sincere pleasure and have a continual feast as its comforting and sublime truths are unfolded.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 2

To the diligent Bible student new light, new ideas, new gems of truth will constantly appear and be eagerly grasped, for it is impossible for any mind to comprehend all the richness and greatness of even one promise of God. One catches the glory from one point of view, and another the beauty and grace from another point, and the soul is filled with the heavenly light.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 3

After the first acquaintance with the Bible the interest of the earnest seeker grows rapidly. The discipline gained by a regular study of the word of God enables him to see a freshness and beauty in truth that he never before discerned.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 4

The Bible may be studied as a branch of human science would be; but its beauty, the evidence of its power to save souls that believe, is a lesson that is never thus learned. It is a leaf from the tree of life, and by eating it, by receiving it into our minds, we grow strong to do the will of God.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 5

Those who bring to the investigation of the word a spirit of which it does not approve, will take away from the search a spirit which it has not imparted. We should take up the study of God's word with humble hearts. All selfishness, all love of originality, should be laid aside. Long cherished opinions must not be regarded as infallible.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 6

Those who study the Bible simply to find texts to prove their theory or vindicate their opinion, will not be enlightened by the Spirit of God. Not through controversy and discussion is the soul enlightened. We must look and live. We must search the scriptures in order to receive life for the soul.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 7

When the heart is brought into harmony with the word, a new life will spring up within, a new light will shine upon every line of the word, and it will become the voice of God to the soul. Then the truth of God's word will be regarded with new interest, and will be explored as if it were a revelation just from the courts above. Every declaration of inspiration concerning Christ will take hold of the in-most soul of those who love Him. Envy, jealousy and evil surmising will cease. The Bible will be regarded as a charter from heaven. Its study will absorb the mind, and its truths will feast the soul.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 8

Several times each day, precious golden moments should be consecrated to prayer and the study of the scriptures, if it is only to commit a text to memory, that spiritual life may exist in the soul. We should take one verse and concentrate the mind on the task of ascertaining the thought which God has put in that verse for us until it becomes our own, and we know ‘what saith the Lord.’WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 9

The mind must be restrained and not allowed to wander. It should be trained to dwell upon the scriptures; even whole chapters may be committed to memory, to be repeated when Satan comes with his temptations. Even while you are walking on the streets, you may read a passage and meditate upon it, thus fixing it in your mind, and God will flash the knowledge obtained into the memory at the very time when it is needed.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 10

We should open the scriptures with reverence, and never allow one expression of lightness and trifling to escape our lips when quoting scripture. As we take our Bible into our hands let us remember that we are on holy ground.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 11

There is little benefit derived from hasty reading of the scriptures. One may read the whole Bible through, and yet fail to see its beauty or comprehend its deep hidden meaning. One passage studied until its significance is clear to the mind, and its relation to the plan of salvation is evident, is of more value than the perusal of many chapters with no definite purpose in view and no positive instruction gained.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 12

If Christians would earnestly search the scriptures more hearts would burn with the vivid truths therein revealed. Their hopes would brighten with the precious promises strewn like pearls all along through the sacred writings. In contemplating the history of patriarchs and prophets, the men who loved and feared God and walked with Him, hearts will glow with the spirit that animated these worthies. As the mind dwells on the virtue and piety of holy men of old, the spirit which inspired them will kindle a flame of love and holy fervor in the hearts of those who would be like them in character, and as they gather the golden truth from the word, the heavenly Instructor is close by their side.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 13

In the word is poetry, wisdom, history, biography and the most profound philosophy. Here is a study that quickens the mind into a vigorous and healthy life, and awakens it to the highest exercise. Studied and obeyed, the word of God would give to the world men of stronger and more active intellect than will the closest application to all the subjects which human philosophy embraces. It would give men of strength and solidity of character, of keen perception and sound judgment: men who would be an honor to God and a blessing to the world, for it enlarges the mind, expands, elevates and endows it with new vigor, by bringing its faculties in contact with stupendous truths.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 14

Even unconsciously we imitate that with which we are familiar. By having a knowledge of Christ—His words—and His Lessons of instruction, we instinctively borrow the virtues of the character which we have so closely studied and become imbued with the spirit which we have so much admired.WMHerald October 26, 1904, par. 15

You may support this service

IMPORTANCE OF SATURDAY SABBATH SHOWN TO ELLEN G WHITE

The Eternal Reward I saw the exceeding loveliness and glory of Jesus. No one can maintain a neutral ground. Those who endeavor to do this will fulfill Christ's words, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon" [Matthew 6:24]. Those who begin their Christian life by being half and half, whatever may be their intentions, will at last be found enlisted on the enemy's side. Double-minded men and women are Satan's best allies. Whatever favorable opinion they may have of themselves, they are dissemblers. All who are loyal to God and the truth must stand firmly for the right because it is right. To yoke up with those who are unconsecrated and yet be loyal to the truth, is simply an impossibility. We cannot unite with those who are serving themselves, who are working on worldly plans, and not lose our connection with the heavenly counselor. We may recover ourselves from the snare of the enemy, but we are bruised and wounded, and our experience is dwarfed.... When a man loses the shield of a good conscience, he knows that he has lost the cooperation of heavenly angels. God is not working in him. Another spirit inspires him. And to be an apostate, a traitor to the cause of God, is much more serious than death, it means the loss of eternal life.
